The official version has Tether involved with the Istanbul Prosecutor's Office, who is investigating the illicit betting operation headed by Veysel Sahin and is trying to recover over $1 billion worth of illicitly acquired cryptocurrencies in Turkey. In reality, the facts are a little more straightforward. The government ordered a private company (the Tether Corporation) to freeze user cash to the tune of $500 million, and the Tether Corporation complied immediately without a publicly visible court order. <h2>The Turkey Operation: What Actually Happened</h2> <a href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/tether-freezes-544m-crypto-turkey-illegal-betting" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino</a> had told Bloomberg that Tether worked with local law enforcement to comply with Turkish law in freezing the users' cash. He compared the interaction to that of cooperating with both the FBI and the DOJ. The lie is in that comparison. Tether did not behave as a cryptocurrency company; Tether has behaved like any bank doing so would have done, to be able to lock down assets, which is not permitted of any bank. No warrant was issued. The wallet holder cannot see the court review. No appeals procedure. The freeze has no time limit. When their money stops traveling, the user is informed. Traditional financial enforcement operates differently; notification requirements, legal deadlines, and due process procedures are in place. Since USDT isn't legally categorized as a deposit, security, or bank account in the majority of jurisdictions, Tether operates in a space where none of those safeguards apply. It's merely a blockchain token that may be blocked by a single business. <h2>Why Tether Wants This Reputation</h2> The push for compliance isn't selfless. For years, Tether has been working to improve its reputation. In 2021, the DOJ launched an inquiry into bank fraud. According to Elliptic's analysis, Iran's central bank allegedly bought more than $500 million worth of USDT in order to get around sanctions. More countries will contact Tether whenever they see that they can freeze wallets more quickly than they can freeze bank accounts. Whether stablecoins can be used as enforcement instruments is not the question. They are already. Tether responds in the affirmative, but what happens if a government other than Turkey or the FBI makes the call? <h2>What This Means for the Stablecoin Bet Crypto Is Making</h2> Stablecoins became a U.S. governmental priority because of the<a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/senate-bill/1582/text" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> </a><a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/senate-bill/1582/text" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">GENIUS Act</a>. The goal of Treasury Secretary Bessent is for the stablecoin market to reach $3 trillion, a tenfold growth. The entire legislative drive is predicated on the idea that stablecoins are beneficial for financial innovation, Treasury demand, and dollar dominance. The fact that a private firm operating on behalf of a foreign government may freeze the token that dominates stablecoin usage globally without any public supervision is causing no one in Washington to question what this means. Stablecoins were intended by cryptocurrency to serve as the link between DeFi and the outside world. Indeed, they are. However, bridges allow traffic to go both ways. The infrastructure that enables Istanbul to freeze every wallet linked to a suspect—and every wallet those wallets touched—is the same system that enables someone in Lagos to transmit USDT to a supplier in Istanbul. There is nothing wrong with the stablecoin paradigm about Tether's collaboration with 62 nations. It's the characteristic that gives governments the confidence to allow stablecoins to exist at all. There was always a trade-off. It was simply hard to ignore because of the Turkey freeze.
