NFTs showed us that you can buy and sell anything. Soulbound tokens are here to show that this is not true. Vitalik Buterin wrote a paper called "<a href="https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4105763" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Decentralized Society: Finding Web3's Soul</a>" in May 2022. It is based on an idea from the game World of Warcraft. In World of Warcraft, some goods are owned by a character and can't be traded or sold, no matter how much money they are worth. SBTs are what you get when you use this identical idea on the blockchain. An SBT is a digital asset that will always be in your wallet and never depart. The name may sound grand, but the message is extremely basic. The point is that not everything should be able to be bought or sold. You shouldn't be able to sell or trade your college degree. You shouldn't give your employment history to someone else. You shouldn't be able to make money by selling your medical records. SBTs say that on Web3, you have "earned" your reputation and identity by what you've done, not by how much money you can spend.<h2>What Is a Soulbound Token?</h2>An NFT that you can't move is called a Soulbound Token. Once it's in your wallet, it can't be moved. For all time. You can't sell it, give it away, or send it to the wrong address by mistake. It stands for something about your credentials, accomplishments, or affiliation that is a part of who you are. In blockchain words, your wallet is like your "soul." Every SBT that is given to that Soul is saved in your permanent on-chain record. The whole concept is that it can't be moved. People buy traditional NFTs because they are rare and in demand, hoping to sell them for more later. SBTs get their value from what they say about the person who has them. A Bored Ape is worth something because someone will pay for it. A diploma SBT is worth anything because it shows you graduated. This difference is important because it completely changes the way people are motivated. People cheat the system to get valuable assets by trading NFTs. You can't falsify credentials or buy someone else's successes with SBTs. The token has no value to anyone beyond the person who earned it.<h2>How Soulbound Tokens Work</h2>When you mint an SBT, it's just like minting a standard NFT. But when you send it to a wallet address, the transfer function is turned off, so it may be locked within that address on the blockchain. You can find it under the Issuer and the Issued Date of record. With this ability, anyone can check or confirm your claim that you have a credential issued by MIT through their wallet on the blockchain using a smart contract. This means you don't have to call registrars and wait weeks or months for official documents to be delivered. Verification is available right away through the blockchain's cryptographically secure method.<h2>When Soulbound Tokens Make Sense</h2>The most obvious use case is for education qualifications. Universities could give SBTs to students who graduated. Employers might check degrees right now without having to call institutions. Students could take their academic records with them from one platform to another, showing their qualifications wherever they travel. Professional credentials operate in a similar manner. SBTs could be given out for medical licenses, bar certifications, engineering licenses, security clearances, or any other credential that shows someone is qualified. If someone loses their certification, the granting authority can still revoke it, but the verification process is now instant and can't be changed. Proof of attendance is also useful. SBTs can be given out by event organizers, courses, or conferences to show you were there. This makes records of participation that can't be falsified. Over time, these give a more accurate picture of a person's interests and level of participation than their own LinkedIn profile. SBTs could be used by reputation systems to keep track of contributions to online communities. DAOs could give out tokens that stand for involvement in governance. Platforms could check users' SBT history from reputable issuers to make sure they are who they say they are. Reputation becomes transferable and verifiable instead of being stored in company databases as centralized scores.<h2>The Problems That No One Talks About</h2>Sadly, reality knocks hard. If you lose your wallet, you lose your whole digital identity. If you lose access to your bitcoin wallet, there is no "forgot password" option like there is with regular wallets. If someone hacks the private keys to your wallet, you'll not only lose your crypto, but also your credentials, all of your achievements, and everything else you've worked for with your on-chain reputation. Social recovery solutions are new technologies that are being worked on. They let people who are already trusted help people get into their wallets. This, like social recovery solutions, needs more people to be able to use the social recovery mechanisms, which makes things more complicated and means that there won't be a straightforward, standard way to get back into your wallet. Another huge worry is privacy. Anyone can see your whole credentials history if they are stored on a blockchain that is open to the public. Credentials show that you have a high school graduation, a college degree, and that you worked for particular companies. There are ways to keep your anonymity, such as using several bitcoin wallets so that you don't have to link many accounts together. But by using various wallets for different credentials, you are making your identity less cohesive and losing the point of having a decentralized and portable reputation.<h2>What's Really Going On</h2>There has been a lot of buzz about soulbound tokens (SBTs), but relatively few people have actually utilized them. Most importantly, Binance gave KYC users <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/22/09/28795904/binance-launches-soulbound-tokens-on-bnb-chain" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">access to BAB tokens</a> as the first SBT token. We see only a few universities trying out SBT degrees and DAOs employing tokens that can't be transferred for their governance systems. There is also enough current infrastructure on several chains to support the full and widespread use of SBTS. We still don't have widespread use by the institutions that give out important credentials, even though many technical problems have been fixed. If organizations like MIT and Harvard, or national and state medical boards and licensing organizations, don't start giving out SBTS extensively, people will think of them as experiments instead of revolutionary changes.<h2>Where This Really Goes</h2>I believe that institutions will be the first to use SBTs, and they will only be available in certain verticals where they have clear and proven benefits. Education credentials can be the "first use" because it's hard to check these qualifications. Employers now spend time and money checking degrees, which should be easy to do. Professional credentials may come next. This is because credential fraud is frequent in these fields and it costs a lot to check them out. Some examples are licenses for doctors, engineers, and money managers. Industries that already have credentialing systems in place and robust government monitoring are more likely to adopt SBTs before industries that deal with consumers. It's not feasible to expect to have a full-spectrum on-chain identification based on SBTs. Privacy issues, problems with managing keys, and the fact that institutions are slow to change will all make it hard for SBTs to be used in many situations. They will only be used in situations where the benefits outweigh the problems that come with using the technology. The most likely result will be a mix of old and new ways of granting credentials, with SBTs adding to rather than replacing the old ones. Colleges and universities may still give out paper diplomas along with SBT tokens. Professional groups will keep their current databases and offer SBT verification as an optional service. Adding a blockchain layer makes it possible to verify without everyone having to know how blockchain technology works.<h2>Final Thoughts</h2>Soulbound Tokens (SBTs) let people make and control their identity and reputation on the blockchain. This protects those parts of digital existence and makes it less need to rely on a central authority as a middleman. SBTs work and make sense. The only thing that is unclear about them is if people or businesses will really use them. Right now, a lot of people and businesses don't want to use new technologies since they are too hard to set up. SBT is a move away from risky investments in the blockchain business and toward a focus on identification and reputation in a decentralized setting. This is an important step in the growth of the Web3 movement. People and institutions can't easily adopt SBT right now, though they are seen as important for the future of the blockchain ecosystem. This is because of privacy concerns, institutional inertia, and the fact that people use the blockchain differently now than they will in the future. The next big chance for Soulbound Tokens will come when a big organization with millions of credential holders determines that the time and money it takes to coordinate the usage of SBT are worth it to check and keep checking credential holders. SBT is still a fascinating piece of infrastructure, but it doesn't have a layer of adoption that would let non-technical people understand how important it is.
