Harmony Horizon Bridged DAI is a digital token that exists on the Harmony blockchain, specifically within Shard 0 of its network. This token is a bridged version of DAI, a popular decentralized stablecoin originally created on the Ethereum network. It was brought to the Harmony ecosystem through the Horizon Bridge, which is a cross-chain protocol designed to allow assets to move between different blockchains like Ethereum, Binance Smart Chain, and Harmony. Under normal operation, the Horizon Bridge works by locking the original DAI tokens in a smart contract on the Ethereum side and then minting an equivalent amount of bridged DAI on the Harmony side. This process is intended to ensure that every bridged token on Harmony is backed one to one by the original asset held in reserve. In June 2022, the Horizon Bridge experienced a major security breach. Attackers managed to compromise the private keys of the multi-signature wallet that secured the bridge. This allowed them to unauthorizedly withdraw the underlying assets held as collateral on the Ethereum side. Because the assets backing the bridged tokens were removed from the bridge contracts, the Harmony Horizon Bridged DAI and several other bridged assets on the network lost their full collateralization. Following this event, the token became what is often referred to in the community as a legacy or depegged asset. While the token still exists on the Harmony blockchain and can be found on its block explorer, it no longer maintains its intended value relationship with the original DAI stablecoin due to the missing reserves. The Harmony project itself is a layer one blockchain that uses a technique called sharding to scale its network. Sharding splits the blockchain into parallel segments to increase transaction speeds and lower costs. Shard 0 serves as the primary shard for the network's consensus and coordination. The Horizon Bridge was a central part of Harmony's strategy to foster a multichain environment, though the 2022 exploit significantly impacted the usage and trust of its bridged assets.
