What is AION (AION)?

Aion is a third-generation blockchain project designed to solve the problem of isolation between different blockchain networks. Launched in 2017 by the Canadian company Nuco, the project focuses on interoperability, which allows disparate blockchains to communicate and exchange data or value with one another. Aion positions itself as the connective tissue that enables a decentralized internet where independent networks, such as Ethereum or private enterprise chains, can work together seamlessly rather than operating in silos. The technology behind Aion is built on a multi-tier architecture consisting of three primary layers: the communication layer, the consensus layer, and the application layer. The communication layer is the most distinct feature, utilizing specialized protocols and blockchain bridges to facilitate cross-chain transactions. Its core public blockchain, known as Aion-1, is a purpose-built system that serves as a hub to coordinate these connections. Developers can use the network to build decentralized applications that leverage features from multiple blockchains simultaneously, such as combining the security of one network with the smart contract capabilities of another. Over time, the project evolved into The Open Application Network, or OAN. This transition shifted the focus toward creating a public infrastructure for what the team calls Open Applications. These are programs designed to give users more sovereignty over their own data and digital identity, moving away from the closed ecosystems of traditional platform economies. In this model, the network acts as an open-source layer for hosting applications that are universally accessible across different platforms. The AION token serves as the native digital asset of this ecosystem. It is primarily used to secure the network through a consensus mechanism and to pay for the computational resources required to process transactions and run smart contracts. It also functions as the fuel for cross-chain operations, incentivizing the validators and participants who maintain the bridges between different blockchain environments. By using the token to access and secure the network, the project aims to create a self-sustaining economic model that supports a global, interconnected blockchain infrastructure. The project was founded by Matthew Spoke, who previously contributed to the Ethereum ecosystem, and is governed by the non-profit Aion Foundation. While the landscape of blockchain interoperability has grown significantly since its inception, Aion remains a notable early pioneer in the movement to unify decentralized systems. It continues to focus on providing the tools necessary for developers to create more flexible and user-centric applications within the broader Web3 space. Learn more

AION (AION) FAQ

Aion is currently categorized as a legacy blockchain project. Since its peak activity periods in 2017–2018, the project’s official development updates and social media presence have become sparse. While the network may technically remain functional, it is characterized by extremely low activity levels. Users are advised to exercise caution and perform thorough due diligence before attempting to interact with the protocol or its associated assets.
In 2019, the Aion project rebranded to The Open Application Network (OAN). The goal of this pivot was to shift focus toward supporting "Open Applications." Despite the rebranding of the network itself, the native utility token retained the original ticker symbol, AION. Therefore, Aion and OAN refer to the same ecosystem, though the project is now officially recognized under the OAN name.
AION has been delisted from several major global trading platforms, including some of the world's largest exchanges, due to low activity and changes in listing standards. Currently, the token is primarily available on a limited number of secondary exchanges or specific decentralized platforms where liquidity may still exist. Users should verify if platforms like LBank or other active providers continue to support the specific version of the token they hold.
Aion originally launched as an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum network before migrating to its own proprietary mainnet. While the project initially provided bridges to facilitate this migration, many of these official swap services have been discontinued as the project moved into legacy status. Holders of the original ERC-20 tokens may find that bridging to the mainnet is now significantly restricted or no longer supported by the foundation.
If an exchange has delisted AION and the official withdrawal window has closed, the funds are generally inaccessible through the exchange's standard interface. This is common on major global platforms where AION was previously traded. To avoid such situations, users are encouraged to stay updated with platform announcements from exchanges like LBank and move their assets to supported private wallets well before any stated deadlines.
The official Aion Desktop Wallet is now considered legacy software and may lack modern security updates. While some third-party multi-asset wallets and hardware wallet providers previously offered support, compatibility may have changed as the network's activity declined. Regarding staking, while the network originally utilized a Proof-of-Stake model, participating in staking is now difficult due to the lack of updated wallet support and minimal network incentive structures.
