Aave v3 stMATIC (ASTMATIC) is an ERC20 token designed to represent staked MATIC within the Lido on Polygon liquid staking protocol. This means that users who stake their MATIC tokens through Lido receive stMATIC in return. A key characteristic of stMATIC is that it is a non-rebasable token; the number of stMATIC tokens held by a user does not change. Instead, the value of each stMATIC token increases over time as staking rewards accumulate for the underlying MATIC held within the Lido protocol. Aave V3 is a decentralized, non-custodial liquidity protocol that enables users to lend and borrow various cryptocurrency assets across multiple blockchain networks. The stMATIC token was integrated into the Aave V3 Polygon market, allowing it to be used as collateral for borrowing other assets. Its main utility on Aave V3 was for creating leveraged positions, particularly benefiting from Aave V3's efficiency mode (eMode), which allowed for higher borrowing power with certain correlated assets. However, Lido, the entity behind stMATIC, announced the discontinuation of the stMATIC token on Polygon. This decision was primarily driven by limited user adoption and insufficient revenue from staking fees to cover maintenance costs. In response to this, the Aave governance proposed and executed a plan to freeze the stMATIC reserve on the Aave V3 Polygon market. This action prevents users from supplying more stMATIC or initiating new borrowing positions against it, though existing functionalities like repayments, withdrawals, and liquidations remain active. As part of the sunsetting process, stMATIC has stopped accruing staking yield. Users are provided a period to redeem their stMATIC for POL/MATIC through the Lido user interface, with the option for redemption via direct smart contract interaction available indefinitely thereafter. Despite the discontinuation, stMATIC is intended to maintain 100% collateralization.
