Voucher KSM (vKSM) is a shadow token representing staked KSM, which maintains a full underlying KSM reserve and incorporates the yield-bearing features of KSM staking rewards. It is issued by the Staking Liquid Protocol (SLP), an in-house decentralized protocol developed by Bifrost. Users can deposit their KSM into the Bifrost SLP protocol and receive vKSM in return. This vKSM can then be traded or later redeemed back for KSM. Holding vKSM is equivalent to holding a KSM staking position. Staking rewards automatically increase the exchange value of vKSM, eliminating the need for manual claiming. The longer vKSM is held, the greater the amount of KSM that will be exchanged upon redemption. One of the primary benefits of vKSM is liquid staking, which allows users to stake KSM and receive a liquid token (vKSM) that continues to earn staking rewards. This vKSM can then be used within Bifrost and other Kusama-based DeFi applications for additional opportunities. The SLP mechanism automatically captures staking rewards by adjusting the vKSM to KSM exchange rate upwards. The vKSM system also offers a floating redemption period, which can be shorter than the fixed 7-day unbonding period for KSM staked directly on the Kusama network. Bifrost SLP aims to enable early vKSM redemption, potentially achieving near-instantaneous redemption by matching real-time vKSM minting and redemption quantities through a queuing system. The SLP protocol also screens verified nodes through governance to maximize staking returns while ensuring validator security. vKSM is designed for multi-environment compatibility as a Substrate asset within the Bifrost parachain.
