Tribe (TRIBE) is an Ethereum-based governance token associated with the Fei Protocol. The Fei Protocol is a decentralized stablecoin platform that was designed to issue the FEI stablecoin, which aimed to maintain a stable value pegged to the US dollar. The project was founded by Joey Santoro, Brianna Montgomery, and Sebastian Delgado, launching in March 2021. The core purpose of TRIBE is to empower its holders to participate in the governance and decision-making processes of the Fei Protocol. This includes the ability to vote on protocol upgrades, adjust the monetary policy for the FEI stablecoin, and manage the Protocol Controlled Value (PCV). The Fei Protocol employs a "direct incentives" mechanism and utilizes PCV to help maintain its stablecoin's peg and manage liquidity. Both FEI and TRIBE tokens adhere to the ERC-20 standard on the Ethereum blockchain. The project operates as a Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) known as the Tribe DAO, meaning its operations are overseen by its community through smart contracts. The Tribe DAO was formed following the merger of Fei Protocol with Rari Capital DAO in late 2021, and it also encompassed other protocols such as Midas Capital and Volt Protocol. The overarching mission of the Tribe DAO was to foster the growth of decentralized finance by offering technical and financial services to new DAOs. Historically, the Fei Protocol introduced a novel model that sought to combine the benefits of fractional reserve banking with decentralized finance. However, in April 2022, the Fei-Fuse money market experienced an exploitation, resulting in a hack that impacted various Rari Capital pools. While the Tribe DAO initially voted in favor of reimbursing the victims of this hack, subsequent proposals for repayment faced contention regarding the distribution of assets. In August 2022, the Fei team announced its decision to wind down the project, proposing a plan for the redemption of FEI and TRIBE tokens for protocol assets.
