Tribe is a cryptocurrency and Web3 project centered around the TRIBE token, which served as the governance asset for the Fei Protocol. Launched in early 2021 by Joey Santoro, Brianna Montgomery, and Sebastian Delgado of Fei Labs, the project was designed to create a decentralized and scalable stablecoin known as FEI. Unlike traditional stablecoins that are backed by fiat currency or over-collateralized with other cryptocurrencies, the Fei Protocol pioneered a mechanism called Protocol Controlled Value. In this model, the protocol itself owns and manages the assets used to maintain the stablecoin peg, rather than having them held by individual users. The TRIBE token functioned as the core of the project's Decentralized Autonomous Organization, or DAO. Token holders were responsible for making key decisions, such as adjusting the parameters of the stability mechanisms, managing the allocation of the protocol's treasury, and voting on upgrades. The project was built on the Ethereum blockchain as an ERC-20 token and aimed to provide a more capital-efficient alternative to existing stablecoin models. A major milestone in the project's history occurred in late 2021 when the Tribe DAO merged with Rari Capital, another DeFi protocol focused on lending and borrowing. This was one of the first and largest mergers between two decentralized organizations. However, the project faced significant challenges following a major security exploit on the Rari Fuse pools in April 2022, which resulted in a substantial loss of assets. Following the exploit and a period of community debate regarding repayment and the project's future, Fei Labs proposed a plan to wind down the Tribe DAO in late 2022. This process, often referred to as a sunset, involved the redemption of FEI stablecoins for other stable assets and the distribution of the remaining protocol controlled value to TRIBE holders. Consequently, the project shifted away from active development and focused on the orderly dissolution of its governance and financial structures.
