Unlike many other decentralized finance (DeFi) solutions, THORChain allows users to swap cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum directly, without the need for wrapped tokens or centralized intermediaries. The core of THORChain's functionality relies on an Automated Market Maker (AMM) model, which utilizes liquidity pools. Each liquidity pool on THORChain pairs RUNE with another digital asset. When a user initiates a swap between two different assets, the protocol automatically facilitates the trade by first swapping the initial asset for RUNE within one pool, and then swapping RUNE for the target asset in a second pool. This process is transparent to the user, who does not need to directly handle RUNE during the swap. RUNE is central to the THORChain ecosystem, serving multiple critical purposes. It acts as the base asset in all liquidity pools, making it an intermediary for every cross-chain swap. Additionally, RUNE is used to pay network fees, secure the network through bonding by node operators, and participate in governance decisions. Key features of THORChain include its ability to support native asset swaps, ensuring users maintain full control of their funds in a non-custodial manner throughout the process. It aims to provide a decentralized and permissionless environment for trading, connecting various otherwise isolated blockchains.
