The network’s economic viability is sustained through its native utility token, often referred to as BZZ (or xBZZ on the Gnosis Chain). This token is used to incentivize node operators to provide bandwidth and storage space. Users pay for storage by purchasing postage stamps with the token, which are attached to data chunks to indicate their value and desired persistence. Node operators who store and retrieve popular data are rewarded, creating a self-sustaining marketplace for digital resources. In addition to the storage protocol, the name Swarm is also associated with more recent Web3 developments, such as the Swarm Network on the Sui blockchain and AI agent frameworks on the Base network. These projects focus on decentralized AI orchestration, where multiple autonomous agents (swarms) collaborate to perform complex tasks like market analysis and content verification. While these newer initiatives share the swarm-intelligence philosophy, the Ethereum-based storage network remains the most established infrastructure project bearing the name. Governance of the storage protocol is managed by the Swarm Foundation, which supports open-source development and fosters the ecosystem through grants and community initiatives.
