What is STEEM DOLLARS (SBD)?

Steem Dollars, often abbreviated as SBD, is a specialized digital asset operating on the Steem blockchain. Launched in 2016 by Ned Scott and Dan Larimer, it was developed to serve as a stable unit of account within a decentralized social media ecosystem. The primary purpose of SBD is to provide content creators and curators with a predictable reward system that mitigates the high volatility typically associated with the broader cryptocurrency market. The Steem blockchain uses a high-performance framework known as Graphene, which allows for extremely fast block confirmations, typically occurring every three seconds. It utilizes a consensus mechanism called Delegated Proof of Stake. In this system, the community elects witnesses to validate transactions and maintain the network. This architecture enables the platform to process a high volume of social media interactions, such as posts, comments, and votes, without requiring transaction fees from users. In terms of utility, Steem Dollars are primarily generated as rewards for users who contribute to the platform. When a piece of content receives engagement, the underlying protocol distributes rewards in a combination of SBD and other internal assets. This design ensures that participants have access to a liquid asset that they can use for commerce within the ecosystem or convert into the network's primary token, STEEM. The conversion process is a fundamental feature of the protocol, allowing users to request a redemption that replaces their SBD with an equivalent value of the native token based on a median price feed provided by the elected witnesses. The asset is designed to function as a stable-value currency, meaning its protocol is intended to maintain a consistent value relative to the US dollar. This stability is maintained through algorithmic adjustments and the backing of the native blockchain tokens. By holding SBD, users can also potentially earn interest, a feature controlled by the network's governance to help balance the supply and demand of the token. Historically, the project underwent a significant transformation in 2020 following a change in corporate ownership, which led to a community-driven hard fork and the creation of a separate blockchain called Hive. Despite this split, Steem Dollars continue to be a central component of the original Steem network, facilitating a creator-driven economy where digital contributions are rewarded with a focus on long-term stability and usability. STEEM DOLLARS (SBD) FAQ

The ecosystem utilizes a three-token system to balance different user needs. STEEM is the liquid base currency used for trading on exchanges. Steem Power (SP) represents staked STEEM, which grants users voting influence and curation rewards but requires a multi-week withdrawal process. Steem Dollars (SBD) is a liquid token designed as a debt instrument, intended to be pegged to a specific value in STEEM to provide content creators with more stable rewards.
SBD is technically an algorithmic or backed stablecoin. Unlike traditional stablecoins backed by fiat currency in a bank, SBD is backed by the blockchain's internal mechanism to convert it into a specific value of STEEM tokens. It is designed to act as an IOU for a target value, though its stability depends on the blockchain's conversion protocols rather than external cash reserves.
Users earn SBD by creating content or curating others on the platform. Rewards are typically split between SBD and Steem Power. However, if the network's total debt reaches a specific safety threshold, the blockchain may automatically adjust rewards to be distributed entirely in Steem Power. This mechanism helps manage the supply of SBD based on the current economic state of the network.
There are two primary methods for conversion. Users can use the internal market for instant trading with other participants. Alternatively, they can submit a formal conversion request to the blockchain. This process takes several days to finalize and grants the user a specific value of STEEM based on the median valuation over that period. Additionally, SBD can be traded for other assets on external exchanges like LBank.
SBD can fluctuate due to market supply and demand. If demand for the token is high, its value can rise significantly because it can only be minted through content rewards. Conversely, during periods of market volatility or network uncertainty, the value may fall below its intended target. Because it is not a hard-fiat peg, its market price is subject to speculative activity and the overall health of the ecosystem.
The Debt Limit is a safety protocol designed to prevent the blockchain from becoming over-leveraged. If the total value of SBD in circulation exceeds a certain percentage of the network's total valuation, the system stops printing new SBD. This 'haircut' protects the ecosystem from a scenario where the debt exceeds the network's capacity to collateralize it, ensuring long-term economic sustainability.
