Shutter is an open source cryptographic protocol and Web3 project designed to enhance fairness and privacy on blockchain networks, specifically targeting issues like front running and malicious Maximal Extractable Value or MEV attacks. The project was initially developed by brainbot to address the inherent transparency of blockchain mempools, where transactions are often visible to bots and miners before they are finalized. This transparency allows malicious actors to reorder or inject transactions to profit at the expense of regular users, such as through sandwich attacks on decentralized exchanges. The core technology behind the project is threshold encryption combined with distributed key generation. In a Shutterized system, user transactions are encrypted before they are submitted to the network. These transactions remain opaque while they are in the mempool, meaning attackers cannot see the contents, such as the specific assets being traded or the price. The transactions are only decrypted and executed after they have been included in a block and their order has been fixed. This decryption process is managed by a decentralized network of specialized nodes called Keypers. These Keypers collaboratively generate encryption keys and only release the corresponding decryption keys once the predefined conditions for block inclusion are met. Because the system requires a specific number of Keypers to cooperate to reveal the keys, no single node or small group can prematurely decrypt transactions or censor specific users. The SHU token serves as the native governance token for Shutter DAO 0x36. This decentralized autonomous organization is responsible for the overall management and development of the Shutter Network. Token holders use SHU to participate in the decision making process, which includes voting on protocol upgrades, funding new development initiatives, and electing the Keypers who secure the network. Recent developments have also introduced mechanisms for staking and incentives where the token plays a role in aligning the interests of node operators and community members. Beyond preventing trade manipulation on Ethereum and Layer 2 solutions like Gnosis Chain and Optimism, the Shutter protocol is applied to several other use cases. These include shielded voting for DAOs to prevent early results from influencing late voters, sealed bid auctions to ensure fair competition, and gaming applications where hidden information is required for fair play. The project recently expanded its accessibility through a dedicated API that allows both Web2 and Web3 developers to integrate these encryption features into their own applications without needing to build complex cryptographic infrastructure from scratch.
