Unlike traditional audit firms, Sherlock provides financial assurance via a staking pool designed to compensate for bug bounty payouts or exploits. This ensures a stronger commitment to audit quality. Sherlock's approach integrates collaborative audits, global contests, and live bug bounties to offer continuous protection to protocols as they evolve. The Sherlock ecosystem comprises three main participant groups: Protocols, Stakers, and Watsons. Protocols engage Sherlock for audits and can opt for smart contract coverage. Stakers contribute to the system by depositing USDC into pools, effectively providing insurance. Watsons are the security experts responsible for conducting thorough audits of protocols' contracts and assessing their risk levels. The SHER token serves as the governance token for the Sherlock protocol. While its governance functionalities are expected to expand over time as the protocol matures, it currently acts as an incentive for stakers and protocols, and provides compensation for the security team. In the future, the SHER token is anticipated to be involved in managing the assignment of Watsons to protocols and other crucial protocol parameters. Sherlock was established in 2021 and was co-founded by Jack Sanford and Evert Kors, originating from a hackathon concept.
