What is RETH2 (RETH2)?

rETH2 is a liquid staking token associated with the StakeWise protocol, a decentralized platform designed for Ethereum staking. Within the StakeWise ecosystem, rETH2 functions as one half of a dual-token system aimed at improving the efficiency of staked capital. While its counterpart, sETH2, represents the initial principal amount of Ethereum deposited into the staking pool, rETH2 represents the staking rewards accumulated by the validator nodes over time. The primary purpose of rETH2 is to provide users with immediate access to their earned rewards without requiring them to unstake their principal Ethereum. Because rETH2 is a standard ERC-20 token, it can be transferred, traded, or utilized within various decentralized finance applications. This model allows participants to compound their returns by swapping their earned rETH2 back into sETH2 or to use the rewards for liquidity provision in other protocols. StakeWise operates as a non-custodial service, meaning users retain control of their assets through smart contracts rather than a centralized intermediary. The protocol is governed by a decentralized autonomous organization, known as the StakeWise DAO, which uses a separate governance token to make decisions regarding protocol upgrades, fee structures, and the selection of node operators. In the broader context of Ethereum’s transition to proof of stake, rETH2 was developed to address the liquidity challenges of early staking, where assets were often locked for extended periods. By tokenizing rewards separately from deposits, the protocol offered a way for users to manage their cash flow and yield more flexibly. Following the launch of StakeWise V3, the protocol has moved toward a more unified liquid staking token called osETH, but rETH2 remains a significant part of the project's legacy infrastructure, representing the reward accumulation for users on the original platform versions. In summary, rETH2 is a utility-focused reward token that enables Ethereum stakers to interact with the DeFi ecosystem using their earnings while their original deposits continue to secure the network. It emphasizes flexibility, transparency, and decentralized management within the Web3 staking landscape. Learn more

RETH2 (RETH2) FAQ

StakeWise V2 utilized a unique dual-token system to separate principal from earnings. sETH2 (Staking ETH) represents the initial principal you deposited on a 1:1 basis with ETH. Meanwhile, rETH2 (Reward ETH) represents the staking rewards your deposit has earned, also maintaining a 1:1 ratio with ETH rewards. This structure allows users to manage their staked principal and accumulated rewards as distinct assets.
You earn rETH2 rewards simply by holding sETH2 in your digital wallet. The protocol automatically calculates and distributes rewards to all sETH2 holders approximately every 24 hours. These rewards are minted directly to your address via an oracle-based contract update, reflecting the performance of the underlying validators in the staking pool.
Because rETH2 is minted directly to your address through a contract update rather than a standard transfer, many wallets and blockchain explorers do not automatically detect the balance change. To see your tokens, you must manually add the rETH2 contract address to your wallet. You can also verify your balance by using the 'balanceOf' function on the token's contract page via a blockchain explorer.
Because rETH2 is a separate token, rewards do not compound automatically. To compound your earnings, you must manually swap your rETH2 for ETH on a decentralized exchange. Once you have acquired ETH, you can re-stake it through the protocol to receive more sETH2. This increases your total principal, which in turn generates a higher rate of rETH2 rewards in the future.
With the launch of StakeWise V3, the protocol has transitioned to a new single-token model called osETH, rendering rETH2 a 'Legacy' token. Holders are encouraged to migrate their sETH2 and rETH2 into osETH using the migration feature in the protocol's dashboard. While legacy tokens still represent your ETH, the focus of the ecosystem and market liquidity has shifted to the new V3 standard.
rETH2 is part of an established protocol that has undergone rigorous audits by firms like PeckShield and Runtime Verification. However, users should be aware of smart contract risk, which involves the potential for bugs in the distribution logic. Additionally, there is liquidity risk; as the protocol migrates to V3, it may become more difficult to swap rETH2 on secondary markets, making native migration or unstaking the preferred paths for exiting positions.
