Quantum Resistant Ledger (QRL) is a blockchain platform designed to provide security against the threats posed by quantum computing. The core of QRL's technology is the eXtended Merkle Signature Scheme (XMSS), which is a hash-based, forward-secure signature scheme. This cryptographic algorithm is recommended by PQ-CRYPTO and standardized by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), ensuring its robustness against quantum attacks. Conceived in 2016 by Peter Waterland, the QRL mainnet officially launched in June 2018. The project was developed to proactively address the vulnerability of existing blockchain cryptography to quantum advancements. QRL initially operated on a proof-of-work consensus mechanism. However, there are plans to transition to a quantum-resistant proof-of-stake consensus mechanism to further secure the network and improve energy efficiency. Beyond its quantum-resistant foundation, QRL also incorporates privacy features such as stealth addresses and ring signatures to enhance user privacy and confidentiality in transactions. The project is open-source, built using Python, and offers a developer-friendly environment with extensive documentation, APIs, and tools to encourage ecosystem growth and innovation. Looking ahead, QRL is developing Project Zond, an upcoming platform that will introduce Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible smart contracts, integrating quantum-resistant security into decentralized applications.
