This process is known as "harvesting" and is designed to reward active network participation rather than just holding a large amount of the currency. NEM incorporates a "Smart Asset System" that allows users to create custom digital assets called Mosaics. These Mosaics can represent various forms of digital assets, from currencies to supply chain items. The platform also uses "Namespaces," which are similar to internet domain names, to provide unique identities for assets on the NEM blockchain. Other features include multi-signature transactions, encrypted messaging, and a node reputation system using Eigentrust++. The NEM blockchain was built with an emphasis on being enterprise-ready and developer-friendly, offering solutions for businesses to tokenize assets, track supply chains, and manage digital identities. Applications extend to areas such as financial services, logistics tracking, and document notarization through features like Apostille. In 2021, NEM transitioned into a new blockchain platform called Symbol, which uses its own cryptocurrency, XYM.
