It is essentially a wrapped version of Binance Coin (WBNB) that has been transferred from the Binance Smart Chain to the Moonriver network through a bridging mechanism. The main function of this token is to enable the seamless transfer of assets and data between these two distinct blockchain networks. This cross-chain capability supports various decentralized applications and use cases that might span across both the Binance Smart Chain and the Moonriver ecosystem. WBNB tokens on Moonriver can be exchanged on decentralized trading platforms, with Solarbeam identified as a notable exchange for trading them. The underlying bridging protocol, Multichain, has faced significant security challenges. In July 2023, Multichain experienced substantial unauthorized withdrawals across several of its bridges, including the one connecting to Moonriver. Following these incidents, Multichain developers advised users to stop using their services and revoke any associated contract approvals. The Multichain service subsequently ceased operations, leading to bridge transactions becoming stuck on their source chains, partly due to the arrest of its CEO and the loss of critical cryptographic keys.
