Moonbirds is a Web3 project centered around a collection of 10,000 unique pixel-art owl non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on the Ethereum blockchain. The project was launched on April 16, 2022, by internet entrepreneur Kevin Rose and Justin Mezzell, as part of their Proof Collective. These NFTs are known as profile picture (PFP) NFTs, meaning they are designed to be used as digital avatars. A core feature of Moonbirds is the "nesting" mechanism, which is similar to staking. Holders can "nest" their Moonbird NFTs by locking them within their wallets, making them untradeable for a period. The longer an NFT is nested, the more benefits and rewards its holder receives. These benefits include access to the Proof Discord community, exclusive airdrops, invitations to real-life events, and early access to future projects within the ecosystem, such as a planned metaverse called Project Highrise. One notable airdrop for nested Moonbird holders was the Moonbirds Oddities collection, a unique subset of the NFTs. Initially, Moonbirds were released under a Creative Commons (CC0) license, which allowed others to freely build upon and reuse the art. However, this CC0 license was later revoked by Yuga Labs. The ownership of the Moonbirds project has changed hands multiple times since its inception. It was initially developed by Proof Collective. In February 2024, Yuga Labs, known for the Bored Ape Yacht Club, acquired Proof Collective and its collections, including Moonbirds. Subsequently, in May 2025, Orange Cap Games acquired the Moonbirds collection. The Moonbirds ecosystem is set to expand with the upcoming launch of its native token, BIRB. This token is scheduled to launch in the first quarter of 2026 on the Solana blockchain. The BIRB token is intended to broaden the Moonbirds project beyond just NFTs, creating an interactive ecosystem that incorporates gaming, rewards, and various participation opportunities for both NFT holders and new community members.
