What is HERMES PROTOCOL (HERMES)?

Hermes Protocol is a decentralized exchange and automated market maker that serves as a core infrastructure component for decentralized finance. Originally launched within the Metis ecosystem and later expanding to other networks like Arbitrum, the project was developed by the Maia DAO team to provide high capital efficiency and deep liquidity. The protocol utilizes an evolution of the Solidly model, which is designed to align the incentives of various participants in the ecosystem. This model, often referred to as ve(3,3) or b(3,3) in later versions, encourages long-term participation through a system of voting and reward distribution. By staking the native HERMES token, users can participate in governance and influence the direction of token emissions to specific liquidity pools. This mechanism, known as the gauge system, ensures that liquidity is incentivized where it is most needed for trading. One of the primary goals of Hermes Protocol is to provide a trading environment with low fees and minimal slippage. It achieves this by supporting different types of liquidity pools, including those for pegged assets like stablecoins and those for more volatile pairs. The protocol employs concentrated liquidity, which allows liquidity providers to allocate their assets within specific price ranges, thereby increasing the efficiency of the capital provided. The HERMES token is the central utility asset of the platform. Beyond governance, the token is used for staking and reward boosting. Users who lock their tokens can earn a share of the protocol's trading fees and external incentives, often called bribes. These bribes are provided by other projects that wish to attract liquidity to their own tokens by encouraging HERMES holders to vote for their specific pools. In its more recent developments, the protocol has transitioned toward an omnichain model. This approach aims to unify liquidity across multiple blockchain networks, allowing for a more seamless user experience when swapping assets or managing yields. By moving away from traditional bridging and focusing on a more integrated architecture, the project seeks to become a comprehensive marketplace for liquidity and decentralized yield strategies. The project is non-custodial, meaning users retain control of their assets at all times through their own wallets. It continues to be a significant part of the broader DeFi landscape by offering tools for both casual traders and advanced liquidity providers who seek to optimize their returns through sophisticated voting and staking strategies. HERMES PROTOCOL (HERMES) FAQ

Hermes is the primary Automated Market Maker (AMM) on the Metis Layer 2 network. Built on a refined ve(3,3) model, it is designed to optimize trading for both volatile assets and stablecoins with minimal slippage. Unlike many common decentralized exchange models, Hermes utilizes a unique 'Fee Incentive Mechanism' that directs 100% of trading fees and external incentives (bribes) to token lockers rather than liquidity providers, aligning the protocol's success with its most loyal stakeholders.
The $HERMES token serves three core purposes. First is voting, where locking tokens grants users the power to decide which liquidity pools receive weekly emissions. Second is staking, which allows lockers to earn 100% of protocol trading fees and bribes from their chosen pools. Finally, the token offers a boosting mechanism, enabling holders of locked tokens (veHERMES) to increase their rewards on provided liquidity by up to 2.5x.
Gauges are the technical mechanisms responsible for distributing HERMES emissions to specific liquidity pools based on community governance. Bribes are incentives provided by external projects to encourage veHERMES lockers to vote for their specific pools. By offering these rewards, projects can attract more liquidity to their tokens, while lockers benefit from additional yield, creating a competitive and efficient ecosystem for liquidity distribution.
Hermes V1 utilized an NFT-based voting system that required users to manually manage locks and vote every week. Hermes V2 introduced the b(3,3) model and the $bHERMES token, which standardizes the locking process. This upgrade automates voting and introduces 'dilution protection,' effectively treating long-term locks as permanent contributions to the protocol. This transition simplifies the user experience while maximizing the efficiency of the incentive structure.
Users can earn yield through two primary methods. As a Liquidity Provider (LP), you can deposit token pairs into a pool to earn HERMES emissions. Alternatively, you can act as a Voter by locking HERMES tokens for veHERMES or bHERMES. Voters participate in governance to direct emissions and, in exchange, receive 100% of the trading fees and external bribes associated with the pools they support.
Hermes is a non-custodial protocol, meaning users maintain full control over their assets at all times. The platform is built using established and widely-recognized DeFi architectures, ensuring the core logic is based on proven industry standards. As part of the Maia DAO ecosystem, the protocol emphasizes transparency. Users are encouraged to review the official documentation for the latest security audits and protocol updates to stay informed on the safety measures in place.
