What is GRIN (GRIN)?

Grin is an open-source, community-driven cryptocurrency project that focuses on privacy, scalability, and fungibility. Launched in January 2019, it is an implementation of the Mimblewimble protocol, which was originally proposed anonymously in 2016. The project is named after Gringotts Wizarding Bank from the Harry Potter series, and many of its early developers used pseudonyms from the same universe. The primary technological foundation of Grin is the Mimblewimble protocol. This protocol allows for a blockchain that does not store the entire history of every transaction. Instead, it uses a process called cut-through to remove spent transaction data, which keeps the blockchain lightweight and scalable. In terms of privacy, Grin does not use traditional public addresses or show transaction amounts on the public ledger. Instead, transactions are constructed through a direct interaction between the sender and the receiver, using blinding factors and cryptographic proofs to verify that coins are not created out of thin air while keeping the participants and values hidden. Grin uses a proof-of-work consensus mechanism to secure its network. Its algorithm, known as Cuckoo Cycle, was designed to be memory-intensive. The project initially launched with two versions of this algorithm to balance accessibility for general-purpose hardware like GPUs while acknowledging the eventual emergence of specialized mining hardware. The project is notable for its commitment to a fair launch. There was no initial coin offering, no pre-mine, and no founder rewards or developer taxes. The development is funded entirely by community donations and supported by a global network of volunteers. Governance is decentralized, with decisions made through open, bi-weekly public meetings and a request-for-comments process rather than a central corporate entity or foundation. Grin features a linear emission model where new tokens are created at a constant rate for perpetuity. This design choice is intended to encourage the use of the token as a medium of exchange rather than a speculative store of value, as there is no cap on the total supply and the relative inflation rate decreases over time. The project is written in the Rust programming language, chosen for its speed and security characteristics. Overall, Grin represents a minimalist approach to digital cash, prioritizing technical elegance and user privacy. Learn more

GRIN (GRIN) FAQ

Grin utilizes the MimbleWimble protocol, which employs Pedersen Commitments to hide transaction amounts while allowing the network to verify that no new coins were created. It also uses Dandelion++ to obscure the IP addresses of nodes broadcasting transactions. For scalability, MimbleWimble’s "cut-through" feature allows intermediate transaction data to be removed from the blockchain. This keeps the data history compact, making it much faster and easier for new nodes to sync compared to traditional blockchains.
Grin has no maximum supply and does not feature halving events. It follows a constant, linear emission model where exactly 60 GRIN are created every minute (one per second) forever. While the inflation rate appears high in the early stages, it naturally trends toward zero as a percentage of the total supply over time. This design is intended to ensure consistent incentives for miners and to position the token as a functional "digital cash" rather than a speculative store of value.
Grin does not use addresses. Instead, it relies on "Interactive Transactions," which require both the sender and the receiver to collaborate to build a transaction. To complete a transfer, the parties must exchange data files or communicate via protocols like Tor or HTTPS. This means a transaction cannot be completed unilaterally; the recipient must actively participate to "sign" their part of the transaction, which is a significant departure from the "send and forget" model of other blockchains.
Due to the interactive nature of the MimbleWimble protocol and the lack of traditional addresses, hardware wallet support is more limited compared to standard tokens. Implementing the necessary communication between a hardware device and the blockchain is technically complex. While community-led efforts continue to explore secure storage solutions, users typically manage their funds through specialized software wallets that support the interactive file-based or network-based exchange required for Grin transactions.
Grin is famous for its strict "fair launch" approach. There was no Initial Coin Offering (ICO), no pre-mine, and no founder’s reward or development tax. The project was launched by an anonymous developer and continues to be maintained by a global community of contributors. Funding for development relies entirely on community donations rather than corporate backing or venture capital. This ensures that the project remains decentralized and that every coin in circulation was earned through mining from the very beginning.
Grin is intentionally designed as a minimalist transactional currency focused on privacy and efficiency. It does not natively support smart contracts, NFTs, or complex Decentralized Finance (DeFi) ecosystems. By avoiding the "bloat" of programmable features, Grin remains a lean protocol dedicated to being a private medium of exchange. Its architecture prioritizes the core functions of a digital currency over the multi-functional Web3 capabilities found on other blockchain platforms.
