ConstitutionDAO was a decentralized autonomous organization, or DAO, that was launched in November 2021 by Graham Novak and Austin Cain. Its primary objective was to acquire a rare, limited edition copy of the 1787 United States Constitution at a Sotheby's auction. This initiative aimed to make the historical document community-owned and publicly accessible. The project utilized a crowdfunding model, primarily through the Ethereum-based platform Juicebox. Contributors who donated funds received PEOPLE tokens, which were initially intended to represent governance rights within the DAO. These tokens would have allowed holders to vote on matters such as where the document would be displayed and other administrative decisions, rather than granting partial ownership of the physical Constitution itself. ConstitutionDAO successfully raised a significant amount of Ether from nearly 17,500 contributors within a short period. Despite its substantial fundraising efforts, the DAO was ultimately outbid at the auction by another party. Following the unsuccessful bid, the organization decided to refund contributions to its participants. However, due to Ethereum transaction fees, the refunded amounts were often less than the original donations for some contributors. The DAO subsequently disbanded its original operational structure. The PEOPLE token, however, continued to exist. It evolved from its initial purpose as a governance token for the ConstitutionDAO into a speculative asset, often referred to as a "memecoin." The reference to "(Wormhole)" in the token's name signifies its presence on multiple blockchain networks, such as Solana, enabled by the Wormhole interoperability protocol. This allows for the token's transfer and trading across different blockchain ecosystems.
