Berachain is an EVM-compatible Layer 1 blockchain that introduces a novel consensus mechanism called Proof-of-Liquidity (PoL). This approach aims to enhance decentralized finance by incentivizing users to provide liquidity within its ecosystem and separating the network's gas token from its governance token. Berachain is currently operating on testnet, with mainnet details subject to change. The project uses a unique tri-token model, consisting of BERA, HONEY, and the Berachain Governance Token (BGT). BERA serves as the native gas and staking token for transaction fees. HONEY is the native stablecoin within the Berachain ecosystem. The Berachain Governance Token, BGT, is central to the network's governance and economic incentives. Unlike many other tokens, BGT is a soulbound token, meaning once it is earned, it is permanently tied to the address that acquired it and cannot be transferred to other addresses. BGT cannot be directly purchased on an exchange. Instead, it must be earned through active participation in the Berachain ecosystem's Proof-of-Liquidity system. This involves actions such as depositing liquidity into whitelisted pools on Berachain's native exchange (BEX) or providing HONEY to integrated decentralized applications. Users stake receipt tokens from these activities in designated "Reward Vaults" to accumulate BGT. Holders of BGT have significant governance power. They can vote on proposals that shape the future direction of the network and determine how BGT emissions are distributed, which directly impacts liquidity across the ecosystem. BGT holders can also delegate their voting power to validators. Furthermore, BGT can be used to "boost" validators, which can increase the validators' block rewards and allow BGT holders to earn a share of core decentralized application fees. BGT can be redeemed or "burned" on a one-to-one basis for BERA, the network's gas token. However, BERA cannot be converted back into BGT.
