Aave v3 WBTC, referred to as 'awbtc', is a crypto asset within the Aave decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol. To understand awbtc, it's helpful to first understand Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) and Aave. Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) is an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum blockchain that represents Bitcoin (BTC) in a 1:1 ratio. This means for every WBTC in circulation, an equivalent amount of actual Bitcoin is held in reserve by custodians. The primary purpose of WBTC is to bring the liquidity and value of Bitcoin to the Ethereum network, enabling Bitcoin holders to participate in Ethereum's vast DeFi ecosystem, including activities like lending, borrowing, and trading, which are not natively supported by the Bitcoin blockchain. Aave is an open-source, non-custodial liquidity protocol that allows users to supply and borrow various crypto assets. When users deposit assets into Aave, they earn interest. They can also use their deposited assets as collateral to borrow other digital assets. Aave v3 is the latest iteration of this protocol, offering various features for users. When Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) is deposited into the Aave v3 protocol, an interest-bearing token called 'aWBTC' is minted. This 'aWBTC' token is pegged 1:1 to the value of the underlying WBTC that was deposited. The 'aWBTC' token represents the user's deposited WBTC and accrues interest in real-time directly in their wallet. Users can freely store, transfer, and trade 'aWBTC' tokens.
