What is AAVE ETH V1 (AETH)?

Aave ETH v1, known by its symbol AETH, is a type of interest-bearing token within the Aave protocol. It is generated when a user deposits Ethereum (ETH) into the Aave platform and is destroyed when the deposited ETH is redeemed. AETH is designed to maintain a 1:1 peg with the value of the underlying ETH held within the Aave protocol. This token can be freely stored, transferred, and traded. A notable feature of AETH is that it accrues interest in real-time directly in the holder's wallet while the underlying ETH is being lent out to borrowers. The Aave protocol, an open-source system built on the Ethereum blockchain, was created to facilitate decentralized lending and borrowing. Its goal is to provide financial services without the need for traditional intermediaries. Aave began as a peer-to-peer lending platform called ETHLend in 2017 before rebranding to Aave in 2018. The first version of the protocol, Aave V1, was launched on the main network in January 2020. Within the Aave ecosystem, users deposit digital assets like ETH into liquidity pools, allowing them to earn interest. Interest rates are determined by an algorithm based on the supply and demand for assets within these pools. Borrowers can obtain loans by providing other cryptocurrencies as collateral. Aave V1 also introduced the concept of "flash loans," which permit users to take out uncollateralized loans, provided the loan is borrowed and repaid within the same blockchain transaction. Specific to Aave V1, positions were not tokenized, requiring users to manually track their supply and borrow balances. The V1 protocol also utilized a separate PoolCore contract to hold assets, a design that was later revised in subsequent versions. Additionally, in V1, the protocol directly used ETH, and it allowed for the redirection of earned interest to different Ethereum addresses, a feature that was later removed in Aave V2. Learn more

AAVE ETH V1 (AETH) FAQ

Aave is a leading decentralized, non-custodial liquidity protocol within the DeFi space. It enables participants to engage as either suppliers (lenders) or borrowers. Suppliers deposit digital assets into secure liquidity pools to earn yield, while borrowers can access these pooled funds by providing collateral. This system facilitates efficient, permissionless financial operations on the blockchain.
Aave functions by allowing users to deposit their digital assets into various liquidity pools, becoming suppliers. In return, they receive interest-bearing tokens (aTokens like aETH) representing their deposited funds plus accrued interest. Conversely, users seeking loans can borrow from these pools by providing sufficient collateral, ensuring loans are overcollateralized to mitigate risk. Interest rates for borrowing are dynamic, adjusting based on the supply and demand within each pool.
Aave ETH v1 (aETH) is an interest-bearing token specifically minted when a user deposits Ethereum (ETH) into the Aave v1 protocol. It functions as a receipt token, digitally representing the deposited ETH. Crucially, aETH is designed to be pegged 1:1 to the value of the underlying Ethereum, meaning its value should always reflect the amount of ETH that can be redeemed.
Aave ETH v1 (aETH) accrues interest because the underlying Ethereum (ETH) that was deposited to mint it is lent out to borrowers within the Aave protocol. As borrowers pay interest on their loans, a portion of this interest is continuously distributed to aETH holders. This yield accrues in real-time, directly increasing the amount of ETH redeemable by the aETH holder over time without them needing to take further action.
Beyond its core function of earning yield, Aave ETH v1 (aETH) offers several use cases. Holders can utilize it for arbitrage trading opportunities, leveraging its 1:1 peg to ETH. It can also be easily sent between wallets, functioning as a liquid, interest-bearing representation of Ethereum. This flexibility allows for its integration into other DeFi applications or for simple peer-to-peer transfers, providing utility as a yield-generating digital asset.
Interacting with Aave and holding aETH involves several risks. These include potential smart contract vulnerabilities, which could lead to loss of funds if exploited. Market volatility of collateral assets, especially non-stablecoins, poses liquidation risks for borrowers. Operational complexity, governance changes, and liquidity shortages are also concerns. Furthermore, oracle risks (reliance on external price feeds) and potential network or bridge risks (for cross-chain interactions) contribute to the overall risk profile.
